Golf is unique from other sports because players learn values like honesty and responsibility by calling penalties on themselves and reporting their own score. The sport is a perfect platform for helping young people develop character because just like in life, players experience the highs and lows of the game.
Thank you for your interest in our youth programs at The First Tee of Roanoke Valley. We are committed to providing each participant with a positive experience in a welcoming and safe environment.
The First Tee is committed to instilling high standards of academic performance, personal integrity, leadership, athletic accomplishment, and skills that will benefit youth throughout their lives. The First Tee Life Skills Experience ™ is characterized by a dynamic curriculum, supportive instruction and positive character building. Our program incorporates these standards through classroom, practice facility and on-course instruction. We teach valuable life skills through the game of golf. All young men and women, ages 7-17, residing in the Roanoke Valley, are encouraged to attend our programs.
The following is a guideline to help you with registration. As always, please feel free to call or email if you have any questions!
Tiger Paws (Prerequisite—none) ages 5-7 – Prior to certification programming, this class introduces youngsters to the basic skills of golf. Sessions are shorter with an emphasis on fun.
PLAYer (Prerequisite—none) ages 7-17 – The entry level class. All new golfers enter the The First Tee as PLAYers and are immediately introduced to playing the game of golf on the golf course and learning some rules and etiquette.
Par: (Prerequisite—PLAYER) ages 9-17– This program is for those who have completed PLAYER. This program focuses on Interpersonal Skills and Self Management and applying those skills to the golf course. Participants must complete 1 nine-hole golf round, as well as other skills challenges and written assessments to graduate to the Birdie Level.
Birdie & Par 2: (Prerequisite: Par ) ages 11-17- This program focuses on Interpersonal Skills, Self Management and Goal Setting and carrying these skills to the golf course. Participants must complete 5 nine-hole golf rounds rounds scoring 63 and under as well as, more advanced skills challenges and written assessments to graduate to the Eagle Level. Mentor training begins at this level.
Eagle & HS: (Prerequisite: Birdie ) ages 13-17– Focus is on Interpersonal Skills, Self Management, Goal Setting and Resistance Skills and carrying these skills to the golf course. Participants are required to complete 10 eighteen-hole rounds (scoring 108 and under), as well as more advanced certification requirements. Mentoring opportunities are available and encouraged at this level.
The First Tee of Roanoke Valley’s primary mission is to provide young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. The First Tee program teaches children lessons that lay the foundation needed to meet the many challenges of life. In support of this mission, need-based scholarships have been made available to help introduce the game’s traditions, values, history and science to juniors throughout southwest Virginia.
As a national organization, The First Tee offers participants an expanding array of scholarship opportunities – for good students, leaders and/or good golfers. As participants achieve levels of certification, they become eligible to apply for scholarship opportunities. AJGA ACE GRANT
The Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant provides financial assistance to young men and women who aspire to earn a college golf scholarship through competitive junior golf.
